ETHS 164 Native American Literature

A survey of Native American literature from early oral narrative to contemporary literature. Includes a comprehensive exposure to Native American prose, poetry, oratory, essay and modern fiction and a basic introduction to the cultural, social, intellectual, and artistic trends of Native American culture and their relationship to contemporary literature. This course includes written analyses. Students analyze the literature and apply critical theory to describe critical events in the histories, cultures, and intellectual and literary traditions, with special focus on the lived experiences, social struggles, and contributions of Native Americans in the United States. This course is also offered as ENGL 164.
